“Transgender people need champions and voices and not people voting against people because they’re afraid—they need somebody willing to take it on the chin, and I’m willing to do that,” Iowa State Sen. Tony Bisignano told me.

Anyone affiliated with a University in any way should start preparing for the National Day of Action for Higher Education on April 17th, 2025. Go to the website for more info — They are doing lots of Zoom organizing calls beforehand too.

In Iowa, Sanders had local folks talk - a poli sci student, a military guy getting his MD, a COSTCO organizer, and a recently fired national park worker. When he spoke, we stood and clapped so long we made *him cry. Let’s go red state reps, you REALLY don’t want to sell out our land and future 👏👏👏

So, this struck a nerve with people. What would it take to do this nationwide? Invite local press to local speak-outs on research. Tell national press we're doing this across the country. Ideas of who could help with this?
Imagine if university presidents instead of cowering, called up their faculty too speak in a round-the-clock marathon across the nation about how their research serves every American who has ever faced illness and disease.

My heart goes out to colleagues in STEM, and to all of higher ed right now. This admin is Not Good for us.

Still, I can't help but wish folks had cared when it was the Rest of Us in the crosshairs. I can't get over the idea that many were OK with us being attacked by the far right because "DEI."

Excellent 🧵 on this evening's NIH announcement of a dramatic reduction in indirect rates for research institutions, which amounts to a generational restructuring of the US research and development ecosystem. These cuts are effective immediately, not just for new grants but for existing ones.
6. The policy does not just affect funding going forward. All existing NIH grants will have their indirect rates cut to 15% as of today, the date of issuance.

For a large university, this creates a sudden and catastrophic shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars against already budgeted funds.

Half day spent taking baths, painting, and watching All Creatures Great and Small | other half planning actions to support the environment, immigrants and trans folks. There are not enough cozy green animal shows and baths in the world — but I am down from four on Nov 5 so that is something
