I don't think Zelenski was fooled for one minute. He has Europe/Canada at his back. The Russian military is close to culmination and their economy is in the toilet. He is just trying to slow the US from openly supporting Russia.

In the past I had always regarded CNN as reasonably (if boringly so) unbiased. With Zelenski trying to prevent an openly hostile US. Knowing that Ukraine is far from defeated and that, with EU/Canada support, they can bring Russia to a military culmination. Tactically a smart thing to do.
