Epistenia coeruleata, one of our larger and more striking chalcidoid wasps. first time I saw one I thought it was a weird chrysidid. last pic is the same specimen just more professionally photographed

Photo from a decade ago of the endangered southern plains bumblebee, Bombus fraternus. Felt extremely lucky to see one in the wild. It was in a restored prairie environment, which is the only place I see a lot of rare native insects

My good friend who works at a soil testing facility told me they're forced to buy equipment through Fisher, but advised by quality control not to buy Fisher brand since "it is a significant safety hazard due to poor quality"....what a state of affairs

I wonder how hard these "legobody" scaffolds are to make for small protein cryoEM. Asking for a friend whose protein of interest is 35kDa and stubbornly refuses to crystallize...

It’s easy to feel the weight of lost protections and broken promises. But stewardship was never theirs to give or take.

Small acts still matter—in the patches we rewild, in the pollinators we protect, in the native seeds we sow, and in the wild things we tend. Hope still matters.

Happy Earth Day.

Nothing more disheartening than spending two weeks to purify a pair of proteins that then fail the activity test...back to square one

Wow! Neodymium(III) chloride is pink! When you work with 99% white powders and solutions indistinguishable from water, this is exciting. Inorganic chemists really do get all the fun colors huh

Feeling nostalgic, thinking it's time to post some old favorites for the BlueSky community >>>

One of the most stunning #flies (maybe insects in general) I've seen: #Leucotabanus annulatus, a horse fly (Tabanidae). Males are naturally white, while females are a bit more drab gray/brown. Raleigh, NC

I only started working with proteins in the last six months, but protein purification is already the bane of my existence. This GST column purification protocol literally takes 12 hours. It's quite the exhausting emotional rollercoaster. Surely there's a better way? Especially when I don't need bulk
