I guess this is one of those things that has become less of an issue as microscopes have gotten more compact

One consideration you have to think about somewhat frequently is where the transformers are in the control console because those generate a magnetic field that could interfere with the beam.

And then there’s times where the control console is very clearly designed to go on one side of the microscope, but for various reasons, it would be way better if the control console could be on the other side and then it’s kind of some bullshit to make that happen.
