In 1916 Lois Weber was the highest paid director in Hollywood.
Finally the Kinuyo Tanaka box set is coming! Though I think it would have been worthy of a proper Criterion release, I’ll take what I can get. Also Sara Gomez! www.criterion.com/current/post...

I realize this was a couple months ago, but you said “early”

Queens of Animation is a fantastic history of the women of Disney.

Nobody’s Girl Friday is a great resource for info on below the line Hollywood women.

Movie Workers does similar things for uk women in film

I've always been a fan of Alice Guy's 1900 absurdity AUTOMATED HAT-MAKER AND SAUSAGE-GRINDER. It is perfect, no notes.

This is incredibly exciting. Sara Gomez is an important link in film history & had such an eye. Tragically she died at 31 with so much more to give.

If you're looking for an accessible place to start I love her little travelogue short I'LL GO TO SANTIAGO. www.criterionchannel.com/sara-gomez-s...

I started the day in freezing muddy water… I am finishing the day in clean hot water. Supervised by Ms Dorothy Arzner

Today's the great Ida Lupino's birthday!

Acting from her youth, she became a pioneer in indie filmmaking. Writing, producing & directing films on controversial subjects, she was very careful to keep the censors on her side, giving her remarkable freedom in what she was able to put on screen.

Mornin’

(My co-worker was very anxious as I was taking this because I was just balancing the cup on my knee)

I mean… the two of them together are possibly the most gorgeous on screen pairing since Monica Vitti & Alain Delon in L’ECLISSE.

When Sarita Choudhury pushed her hair out of her face in the grocery store, I died.

Probably it's unavailability from late '60s-'83 also gave it mystique, which has worn off now because for our generation it has always been viewable, but for boomers & genX I can only imagine how tantalizing the "forbidden five" must have seemed.

Then again, the other 4 are all much better films.

Maple, pecan, walnut, hickory nut pie. The maple is from my next door neighbors (best maple syrup anywhere) and the hickory nuts were foraged from some trees near where I like to go for walks. Looking forward to seeing how it came out tomorrow!

Anyone have any advice about making a Movie Trivia Pub Quiz, that is good for both casual film goers and film geeks? I've been asked to, and it's remarkably hard to calibrate the questions right, so it's not too easy, but not impossible either. Happy for any pointers!

Visiting LA & have decided SPEED is a documentary about LA public transit… it won’t get you where you need to go, & the subway is cavernous, empty, & unfinished.

Honestly, if people actually used the subway it wouldn’t be bad, but it’s truly unnerving to be the ONLY person in a subway car.

Just rewatched D.E.B.S. for the 1st time since finding it in the New Releases of my video store in 2005 & oh my goodness it's silly & I love it.

What I find incredibly telling is the reaction of the male critics at the time… sorry my dudes the movie with the sexy lesbian spies was not made for you.

Happy Birthday to the greatest action star of the 90s...

Also POINT BREAK is just the best action movie ever made.

This is probably unintentional. Keaton did stoop to racist jokes (SEVEN CHANCES, NEIGHBORS) & THE GENERAL is Confederate apologia, but I wonder if there was a certain satisfaction for those Black actors hired to play waiters & cooks, to get to chase a white star in blackface out of the scene.
September 1, 2023 at 7:16 PM
Part of me wants to read this scene as a commentary on the inherent inauthenticity of blackface, a white person taking one of the limited jobs open to Black people & doing it badly, being then punished not by white society, who are oblivious, but by the people who were the intended butt of the joke.

Absorbing watching Buster Keaton's COLLEGE last night. There's a lot to delight, so many stunts pay off beautifully for the end, but there is a blackface scene. The scene ends though with Keaton being found out by the other waiters & chased out of the kitchen & job by Black actors wielding knives.

On Sylvia Sidney's birthday I feel the need to say that she put in one of the greatest performances of all time in Dorothy Arzner's MERRILY WE GO TO HELL. It is subtle, heartbreaking, and gorgeous.
