There is a long tradition of right-wing populist leaders signing "contract" with "the people" (and then breaking them)

In 2001, Silvio Berlusconi di it live on RAI 1, the Italian national broadcast.

Behind the law and labour market lies a machinery that churns out precarity.

#Migrants are not falling through cracks. They’re pushed.

New @iclaimeu.bsky.social report by @ilsevanliempt.bsky.social and myself on the irregularisation of #migration in Europe and why we need to rethink how we think, talk and address the issue

In 2019 @rggonzales1.bsky.social @annapapoutsi.bsky.social Martha Franco and I described the repeated interactions between border agents and migrants attempting multiple times to board a ferry in Greece as a 'game of cat and mouse'.

An emperor’s new clothes scene, where a court of (national and international) sycophants, unwilling to face his nakedness, congratulates Trump on the beauty of the taxpayer-funded golden leaves he’s stuck everywhere around him.

This is what I mean when I say that I feel like I'm living in a parallel universe

And #Labour is copying not only the slogans, but also the visuals of Nigel Farage (thanks @yakopov.me for sharing UKIP logo)

'thanks' to the algorithm, this is what I woke up to every morning... As a foreigner, this really gets me in a good mood (not) for the day.

Rather than building cohesion, such insecurity risks producing the opposite: disenfranchisement among those left in limbo, and heightened suspicion among the wider public, who are encouraged to believe that migrants must continually prove themselves.

Hey Google, did the St.George flags of far right protesters reach @10dowingstreet.bsky.social?

No, Keir Starmer put them up personally to welcome new ministers during the reshuffle
September 14, 2025 at 5:26 AM
Not sure it will work great diplomatically
September 5, 2025 at 7:17 PM
I know this is not the news of the day, but who put those flags in front of @10dowingstreet.bsky.social? Farage is abroad.
#KeirStarmer?

The UK wants (cheap and docile) labour no (family) ties attached. My op-ed for @uk.theconversation.com based on our @iclaimeu.bsky.social recently published reports.

I attended a conversation with @iomchief.iom.int at @odi.global yesterday, the word #displacement was used so many times that by the end of it I thought I was listening to @unhcr.org chief.

The lives of millions of people should not be treated like an episode of a reality TV. They don't need a cliffhanger to know if they will be bombed to death so Donald Trump can monopolise the front pages of world media another day.

Getting ready for @irisbirmingham.bsky.social awayday at #MAC. Looking forward to talking about methods and the futures of #migrationstudies

and while Trump/Netanyahu threaten Tehran with a nuclear attack ("Trump doesn't want a cease-fire but a real end to the conflict"), Starmer plays at the trade deal with Trump ("Trump says UK is protected from tariffs ‘because I like them’ ). That's the measure of it.

Looking at @theguardian.com front page you wouldn't be able to tell that the war started with an unprovoked attack by Israel

Am I missing something here? Why has BBC chosen to illustrate a story about corruption with an image of the person accused wearing a Palestinian scarf? From what I read, the story has nothing to do with Palestine. It feels like yet another attempt to deflect attention from the genocide in Gaza.
