I was requested to do a peacock - Indian Peafowl - and used watercolors, with added layers of metallic watercolors and pens. We saw a video of a failed courtship, & my granddaughter wrote: “The femalm peafowl did not look at mal peafowl in a video. Then he got mad! And then he wakt awae!”

Now we have my favorite bird - the Common Loon, done in watercolors. I asked my granddaughter to write what she found most interesting: “They carey they babys on they back.” I agree, that is cool.

Now a Ring-billed Gull. I decided it should be done in gouache, a medium I had never used. So I bought a set and got to work. My granddaughter enjoyed a video of a gull taking a bag of chips from a store. “They stele chips.” #BirdArt

The Bald Eagle presented a good opportunity to go monochromatic. So this one is a fine-line pen. “They are not bald. Cus they have fethers.” #BirdArt

Cooper’s Hawk is a familiar visitor to our yard. We have an excess of House Sparrows so that’s fine with me. This one is Prismacolor pencil. “My gramu sees them.” She said she has no idea how to spell “grandma” - close enough! #BirdArt

This one was fun to do - Canada Goose in watercolor pencils. I like the splashy effects. “They say onk.” #BirdArt

Time to use the glitter watercolors! I outlined the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and the trumpet flowers with metallic pens too. “They eat neckter.” #BirdArt

We learned about Australian Magpies from Bluey (“Curry Quest,” 3:8). YouTube has videos of them attacking bikers during nesting season. The swooping one is done with brush markers, the standing one with watercolors. “They atack pepel.” #BirdArt

I’ve been attracting Baltimore Orioles to my yard - what a cheerful sight! Done with pastel pencils. “They eat jely and orangis to.” #BirdArt

Sandhill Cranes are a favorite, although quite intimidating up close- I explained to my granddaughter that they are sometimes near her house, and she remembered seeing them on the grass outside her school. Watercolor with ink pen; “They go to my school.” #BirdArt

So far our birds have been local, but my granddaughter learned about this cool Australian bird. I did the Satin Bowerbird in the style of Eric Carle. I painted acrylics on tracing paper, cut them out & glued the pieces in the journal, with oil pastel details. “They cleckt blue stuf.” #BirdArt

I thought it would be fun to draw a crow on black paper. Prismacolor pencils and ink; I pasted the black paper into the book. I drew a nice little murder on a wire; my granddaughter decided it needed rows of stars too, so she added them while unsupervised. “They are black as the nite.” #BirdArt
