It’s so good. Though I consider MD among my favorite movies, I periodically forget this scene exists and am surprised/delighted anew when I rewatch. It feels like Lynch doing Coen brothers in the best way possible.

The costume design takes Trek’s long-standing contention that in the future everyone will wear pajamas all day to its blandest extreme.

I kind of love it the way I love any movie that could only have happened in an incredibly narrow moment in time. Roddenberry got an insane amount of post-Star Wars studio money to get his ragtag gang back together to make his 2001, and by god, it’s exactly as ill-conceived as that sounds.

Any theories as to what changed around 2000?

I dunno. The average old person’s “library” is full of racist tracts, Chicken Soup for the Soul volumes 1-7, and a circa 1980 AAA street map of the 5 square miles where they spent 98.7% of their life.

I only read GI Joe, so I had no idea what was up with that cover. I don’t think Snake Eyes was even in that issue (one of my favorites in the whole run).
