In high school we had a bar called Someplace Nice. In college we had a bar called Father’s Office. Now I’m a full-fledged grown up in a bar called Study Hall. I’m not with a load of drunk pals though… I’m with a good book. And a pen. So there’s that.

Yesterday a great friend calls from MN, says her dissertation will be on #grief. You lost your dads 6 months apart & it's a good, long talk. Today another great friend crawls through her attic in Italy, finds & scans & posts this pic you've never seen w/your dad in KC. This world is such a #wonder.

Sometimes writing is staring at a screen, typing, typing, typing. Other times it's living your life, doing your thing, maybe thinking hard about the details of it all later, when the impulse strikes. Glad to say I've got a little living in lately. AND I learned how to post a photo. Bonus!

#patronsaint. When I was feeling dejected 'cause not everyone gets my sense of humor, #RICHARDRUSSO wrote in his green pen on my ms "so damn funny." Made my world tilt on its axis! Flowers & butterlies & puppies. I love him, his work, his teaching, his whole vibe. His writerly memoir is THE BEST.

When your best writer friend is researching Lady Byron, one must have afternoon tea at Brown’s hotel. Lots of literary greats have stayed… Agatha Christie, Mark Twain, Borges & Stephen King who outlined his novel, Misery, while there. Hopefully not inspired by it.
