Jimmy was the 5th of 10 children of Rev. Shiu Chiu Yiu, a Methodist minister from Guangzhou, and his wife, Tai Duck. All siblings, except his eldest sister and the two youngest, were born in Canada. After nine years in Kamloops and Saskatchewan, the family moved to San Francisco in September 1925.

Even small cities in Canada have much better transit service compared to US ones. Ridership in Kamloops, BC is 3.5m vs 1.3m in Missoula, MT. Roughly the same size town and both have a decent sized university. Missoula even has no fares and is a third of the ridership
