War Child works in 14 countries to protect, educate, and stand up for children living through conflict - from Ukraine and Sudan to Gaza and the West Bank. Since 2006, War Child have been working in the occupied Palestinian territories to keep children safe and advocate for their rights. This @keaneofficial.bsky.social thread is important, so I'm also reposting it with alt text.
Our relationship with War Child goes back nearly twenty years now. We've always been in awe of them. They've changed so many lives and repaired so much damage in the world. But the work they're doing in Gaza at the moment is on a different level. We've felt just as helpless as everyone else watching what's going on there and so we asked War Child if they could give us a picture of what's happening on the ground - from their direct experience rather than through the lens of the media. It's important to understand that War Child have staff working in the field who are themselves Palestinian. They told us of the exhaustion of just trying to survive and find food. It's amazing how much War Child are still able to do given the situation. During our phone call they explained how important it is to also think about the long term impact and how much work will need to be done in the future. For us, the bottom line is that whatever your political standpoint, race, religion - people all have the same basic needs. That is the very core of what humanity is the common needs that we share as a species. We've travelled all over the world with our music and if there's one thing we know it's that you find the same focus on family and community EVERYWHERE. Whatever our preconceived idea of a place is it's always wrong. We've experienced it over and over again. It's humbling, enlightening, heart-warming. We're sure others must experience the same thing. But to put it simply - we have a duty to each other, globally. So together with War Child we have put together a series of posts that we hope will help in some small way to build more understanding about what is happening and what we can all do about it. I've found that I need a straw to (mostly) drink reliably these days, so I thought it would be good to have my own travel straws, just in case. Finding longer ones for single-serve bottles proved challenging.

But finding this particular set, well, let's just say it makes things easy.
A package of two tins (the top one a sort of sea blue, the bottom one a pale grey) holding reusable silicone straws. The packing and the tins have a lot of text on them -- kind of, like, *too* many words -- but the important part is the color name on the two tins. The blue tin calls its color "Sea," and the grey tin says "Fog."

Hello, friends. I have not been catching up on things here for a few weeks because everything is a bit overwhelming.

In one of the quickest shipping turnarounds I've ever had, the Keane prints by Jon Stone I ordered the other day have already arrived -- delivery from London within 36 hours!

Now I just need to make my space presentable enough to display them.

When I open a star, I pinch the straw in the middle and tear the paper, making two roughly equal halves.

I've been doing this since the late '80s. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else do this.

So why?

Today's the anniversary of Tom Chaplin's debut solo record, "The Wave." I missed out on it at the time, but I've come to know and love this beautiful album.

I even wrote about how the song "See It So Clear" really connected with me in an unexpected way.

And what's that scribbled across the lyrics? Is that Tom Chaplin's signature in blue Sharpie? Did I get him to deface library materials? Kind of, yeah. (Did I tell him? No, there wasn't time. Maybe one day I'll share the anecdote with him; who knows.) See, this is the exact copy I was listening to when I connected with the song so deeply, and whether I "lose" this before it gets returned or I keep it after it's discarded, it's gonna stay with me, so... when I had the chance to get it signed, I couldn't *not* take it, right?
