Yes, the id is free. However, you need a birth certificate to get one, and many people do not have their birth certificate. It costs $20 to get a copy from vital statistics.

The current statute requires a photo id. That’s why it’s considered one of the most restrictive in the country.

We’ve had one of the most restrictive voter id laws in Wisconsin since 2016. This initiative was confusing to voters - most thought if you voted no, it would repeal voter id (helped by misleading ads.) The repubs wanted it enshrined in an amendment, so it can’t be revised.
