Korean hip hop artists, part of the ethnic majority in their own country often choose to adopt aspects of African American culture, particularly from rap and hip hop traditions. As mentioned in class, being the ethnic majority in your own country you generally do not experience such discrimination.

The portrayal of female K-pop idols has changed quite a bit since the mid 2000‘s. If their sexualization and objectification used to be shown more blatantly, nowadays it’s being shown in more subtle and suggestive ways making the viewer imagine more.

I do think that female empowerment messages in K-pop are more than just a marketing trick. But nowadays it’s hard to decipher which of them are genuine and which aren’t.

According to Park, Psy’s huge success in the US with Gangnam Style wasn’t just because the song was catchy. His image matched a stereotype that Western media is comfortable with, a silly and harmless Asian guy.

Saying that the government made K-Pop is disrespectful to the artists as it undermines the hard work, creativity and sacrifice of the people who actually built the industry from the ground up.
