There’s a lot of talk on the news about the City of Dallas either renovating City Hall or tearing it down and building a new one. I always think of this shot of Shelley Rene, a pioneer of bold nude in public photos back in the 1990s.

I found some of my favorite photos of me from Bay to Breakers on the Web after the race, ones that depict me standing out in a crowd. I only stand out because I’m free from this mass compulsion to wear clothes all the time.

When I walk the Bay to Breakers nude, I feel privileged and special. Clothes aren’t required, and I have shed the society-induced dependence on them. People either look away or want to celebrate my independence with a photo (like this one from 2012).

As a kid, I was inspired to write my own stories after reading books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, who was born 150 years ago today. And the cover artists of those reprinted paperbacks might have inspired me to begin modeling for art classes.
