To Nkroachment: Yarbles.
She was (is) an amazing front-woman - actually quite underrated despite her gargantuan fame - and I love to watch her expressions change in response to the lyric in this promo.

Tbh I've only heard bits of MC - every NO album after Get Ready just seems like a Bernard solo LP to me and that's something I can happily live without at this late stage!

Red Starr's reviews were very important to me back when I was devouring Smash Hits, but I didn't discover it was Cranna in disguise until years afterwards. He also wrote the short-lived Independent Bitz page which was pivotal to my evolving music tastes... if I met him I'd definitely buy him a pint!

If you've read Hooky's stories about recording Republic you'll already know why it's such a terrible LP... "Regret" is the last bona fide NO classic IMWO - but I'm a miserable old fart, right?

Tbh I find virtually everything after PC&L a downer... so much squandered potential. I should probably write a book and get over it!

Except: Billy Corgan cameoing on a New Order record?
Er, thanks but...

I loved 'em when I was a TOTP-obsessed kid. Their daft high-speed covers actually turned me onto some decent music, albeit backhandedly...

I wasn't impressed the first time I saw it - being a fan of Ballard's book, etc - but a second viewing changed my mind. It's visually startling, if nothing else...

It's honestly one of the funniest black comedies I've ever seen.
November 24, 2025 at 11:17 AM
Ah, you've mentioned it in the article - sorry!

Yes, will do. I remember reading something years ago about the director's intended closing shot being of Bob Peck turning into a tree... odd, perhaps, but it's a deceptively odd show.

I rewatched it a couple of years ago, it's still gripping viewing.

I doubt the Beeb has the budget or inclination to produce something equivalent nowadays unfortunately, but time will tell.

Some Velvet moaning. Big fave at the time, most of us wondered why it wasn't on the LP.

Aha! I remember The Cow, and the pile of rubble the contractors left after it had been demolished. Beeston was a hotbed of punk & post-punk action it seems, what with Katie's plus numerous gigs at the University Union... it's a shame there's so little recorded or photogrphic evidence of any of it.

Whereabouts on Middle St was it - any idea? Just wondering if the building is still there?

Never heard of Dave Chaos before!

Tbf I spent most of the '80s in that exact same position but with a far more modest vinyl stash.
