I had a great time this morning sharing my (very minimal) flint knapping skills at CEAMC. The students also had the chance to flake shale and grind a Moynagh Point roughout. They surprised my by grinding a nice blade on a roughout I had given up on!
UCD Archaeology students doing their experimental archaeology practicals today, as they do every Friday at CEAMC! This week, stone carving and flint knapping with Dr Anita Radini and Dr Ryan Lash, assisted ably by Lucy Robinson and Deborah Buchanan.

Can the archaeological collective help? These are finds from our recent excavation at Glendalough. All from cultivated soils with lots of C19-20 material. Triangular(ish) sections, varied widths. They are very clearly a 'thing' but we don't know what. Any suggestions/parallels appreciated.

The desk squares have finally been put together! I’m sure there’s a lesson in there about consistency and hard work paying off over time, but really the colours just make me happy.

I’ll have a table at this year’s Festival if you fancy having a go at grinding a Moynagh Point into shape!
Are you coming to UCD Festival on Saturday 7th June 2025? At the UCD Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture, we'll be presenting a range of activities, and we might be a bit more peaceful that some parts of the campus, if you'd like a gentle sensory experience.

Perfect weather this afternoon for collecting raw materials from the beach in Bray. Flint was particularly plentiful today, but I also came home with some nice new hammer stones. By far the strangest find of the day: a wax candle. 🤷‍♀️
