Forever in a grumpy mood. Fed up by colonial epistemologies.
I won’t hold back here.
It’s been a minute since I’ve been here. Wanted to share our recently published article. We wrote about social imaginaries that are being reproduced and contested in the Yemeni diaspora in Cairo. Eager to hear feedback!

If you're a professor, you have a LOT of power. Not to freak you out, but authoritarian regimes' favorite first move is to shut down the intellectuals in one way or another. Which means you're a threat to them.

Use your power. Speak out. Go on TV. Give interviews. Be loud!

As part of their election campaign, the AfD distributed ‘deportation tickets’ to individuals who, in their view, didn’t appear German. If someone handed me one of these, I think it would be the final push I needed. Take it as a god sent sign to leave before everything takes an even darker turn

(1) Seeing how overwhelmingly white scholars in Germany are who specialize in the politics of the Middle East and North Africa, I’m again reminded by how early the odds are stacked against people like me. The education system systematically filters out so many voices long before

Ppl worried abt "instability" - was Assad a haven of stability?
-facilitated jihadists to Iraq
-forcibly displaced ~50% of Syrians to Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, Europe
-fuelled the rise of ISIS
-enabled Iran to extend its axis
-enabled Russia to extend its malign influence

This morning I couldn’t stop watching TikToks of Egyptians telling Syrians they don’t want them to leave because they’ve grown too attached. The brotherhood, solidarity and love for each other 😭

Hopelessness and despair is for the privileged.
But I don’t find the times hopeless, just hard.Humans have been building from wreckage as long as we’ve existed. Folks in our position last century watched their world crumble too. And then they built something new. There are opportunities for a better world in the demise of the one we have known.

Not sure whether to be shocked or unsurprised by an email from the university administration, which coordinates an international fellowship program, asking me to supervise a Zionist MA student. Can’t tell if they’re ignorant, intentionally provocative, or completely out of touch 🫠

I haven’t posted here in a long time. Reading through my old posts, I’ve realized that not only has nothing changed, but things have grown even more absurd. Buckling up for the new fascist world order.

People in academic conference be saying shit like “wow fascinating” as if we’re talking about an object or abstract concepts and not real life people who went through traumatic conflicts. How detached can people be…

Two months later and this is still going on. What the actual fuck.
I still can’t get over the fact that many colleagues around me are still obsessing over what Hamas committed two months ago in one day and continue to ignore the ongoing (!!) apocalyptic conditions in Gaza. Palestinians do not have the luxury to mourn their dead or deal with their trauma.

Observing the current public discourse in Germany feels like watching an uncomfortably cringeworthy sitcom that you can't help but continue watching. It feels like a slow crash.

This is fucking despicable. We've known this since Refaat (ok, before that), but they're seemingly systematically targeting the ability of Palestinians in Gaza to articulate their own view of what's happening to them. I've seen censorship. I've seen attacks on journalists. But I've never seen that.
Hours after appearing on a live interview with Al Jazeera last night, the apartheid regime murdered Palestinian political analyst Dr. Ayman al-Rafati in a targeted airstrike this morning in Gaza.

For days I can’t stop thinking about these people who tried hinder an aid truck from entering Gaza. How much hate do you need to carry within you to wake up in the morning and make your way there to ensure that more people die of starvation or disease.
