The choices of Frodo, Aragorn or Faramir speak to me, now atheist, just as powerfully as when I used to be a Catholic. My personal guess is that Tolkien was one of those Christians for whom faith and tradition deepened their humanity - and it shines through the text

I wish more Christians in general were familiar with this part of their tradition. I remember the first moment, decades ago, when I was intruduced to the legacy of Christian mystics. Even now, as an atheist, I find myself surprised by the fruits born from those encounters with St. John of the Cross,
