"american" is the neutral term, flawed as it may be. anything else either has preexisting connotations or draws attention to itself in such a way that undermines neutrality

people can change and any given person (you included) can choose to accept an apology if they feel it's been earned. personally this is the first ive heard of this - i don't have a horse in this race - but the 'apology' seems a lot more like an attempt to obfuscate and downplay the claims to me
