- Rolin says that he always had Ben Daniels in mind for a role despite scheduling conflicts. Okay so I just finished Rolin’s Gold Derby chat and here’s my notes from there too

- Rolin said he wanted to capture the romance between Louis and Lestat but also the operatic nature of heightened emotions between them for IWTv S1+2 - Rolin is asked about where he decides to deviates from the source material and explains, citing S2, that there was a lot less plot in the second half of the 1st book - He also notes that he teased out the different conversations being had by the characters and used that as a guide - Ultimately he says he tries to jam as much of Anne Rice's words and prose into the writing of the show as he and the writers could - Minor changes he said are due to adapting it for tv such as the way characters speak, omitting characters, and moving the timeline forward - Rolin says adapting the Theatre des Vampire troupe was fun because it was opportunity to show theater to a tv audience and accomplished this by hiring writers who are playwrights and actors with theater experience - Rolin notes he was given notes by AMC to not recreate the film version of the coven and was tasked with how to make it stand out while also playing homage to how well it was done in the 94 film - He said the timeline of the show gave them room to play and tease out more than the book and film did to show a more gritty and dirty side of the theatre vamps and also how the first few years after the WW2 aren't often shown - Jones also says that going from the chamber drama of Louis, Lestat, and Claudia to the theatre troupe was fun to explore but also how Louis discovers his truth along the way

- An example of how she does this is with their cinematographer, David Tattersall as well as lighting designer to really be selective in crafting the environment of the show - Mara says she’s learned she hates coffin and designing them. Especially for the many different angles to consider for shooting 😂 - She also said the vampires being destructive saddens her because of what gets destroyed because of their power even if she was promised it wouldn’t be torn apart - Mara says she loves this show from a viewers standpoint is that you can see how much love and care went into every aspect of its creation and in general is a fan

- The exterior set was a postage stamp set where the only real physical part of the set were the stairs and door way leading into the apartment. The rest was the backing plates - The surveillance photos were part of those backing plates/backdrops used - The apartment exterior they shot on the show was the house described in the books - The consistency for Mara is about honoring the themes of the show, for her it was about showing how these characters live within the time period we see on screen - Mara notes what makes her journey distinct as a set designer is she moved from Detroit to NOLA and earned her masters degree in Architecture from Tulane University - She also praises Anne Rice for her ability to capture the sense of place and atmosphere in her stories - Mara wanted to capture the otherworldliness of the places she designed for this show

approached set design as a period piece and not a traditional fantasy genre show - s1 the story was more about perspective; focus was Louis was 1910- early 40’s - S2 was focused on post war Paris - Mara said that Easter eggs was something she heavily considered for the fans - For the SF set in the 70’s, they had photographers travel to SF to shoot the house for backing plates for the set which were put over the camera
