Couldn't agree more with your last sentence! Truly don't understand your use of "betrayal." Your sexual assault metaphor is pretty loaded, but yeah, I carry mace with me, and not because I feel responsible for potential attacks. Does it prevent me from blaming assaulters? Nope.

Holding Israel accountable doesn't absolve "them" from anything, and we should speak truth to power regardless of the circle we're in. To me, this feels like doing Israel's bidding, and accepting the premise that we somehow need to close ranks around Israel. I think we just disagree here-that's ok.

I guess I think of it more as opposing a foreign nation, inextricably linked to our own, that is making Jews everywhere less safe. I think our accountability is to each other.

What's also true, to your point, is that this is not a uniquely Jewish responsibility or imperative. At all. But we do have a unique power in criticizing Israel that others can't.

This is all true, but the difference is not everyone has a violent regime claiming to act on their behalf (types from America in 2025, so...maybe this is theoretical🤷🏻♀️). I don't think it's about passing a test or accepting a false choice, it's simply pushing back against a claim on our volition.

The question is whether we allow the Israeli government to speak for our interests. If we do not want our indentities as Jews conflated with Israel's interests as a regional colonial power, we need to say so, not because MTG is making the connection, but because Israel is.

What role does the Jewish community play in weakening the ability to tie Jewish life in the U.S. with the state of Israel? We also need more of us denouncing Zionism, loudly and clearly.

No matter how well-meaning, the audacity of a certain cohort to proclaim their expertise about the Middle East and make declarations about the people there is the height of hubris. Palestinians have been the victims of this pompous opining for decades.
