This is the time to harvest a portion of your flowers seeds after a hard freeze. I keep a corner of the garden for my heirloom zinnias. Gently pull individual petals away from the stalk, at the base will be a diamond-shaped seed. Store in a covered container.

This is a photo of 2 thoroughly dried zinnias. Pre-frost, they were both a pretty dark pink. Heirloom annuals produce viable seeds. I carefully pull out each dry petal. Zinnia seeds are thin, diamond-shaped. Viable ones are usually black or dark brown. Gray or white are not viable. Store in a clean container such as a glass jam jar. Keep in a cool, not cold space.

Today, I baked 2 loaves of oatmeal-whole wheat-molasses bread; I only use this recipe after we have had our first frost and the house is warm and cozy. You have to encourage the yeast for the two rises-it is a very heavy dough.

Just came out of the oven: a loaf of bread on cutting board cooling. The surface is gently cracked and flour from the final kneading covers the surface too. The second loaf came out of the oven with some major 'rifts', the the internal temperature reading said it was done. When I tapped the surface, it made the expected 'thunking sound'.

My great-uncle Wilfred who served three and half years in the trenches as part of the British Expeditionary Force. He survived the battles of Verdun, Belleau Wood, and Battle of Passchendaele. He taught me to be anti-war and to be a liberal.

Their grandchildren were born in the United States. When each baby survived the first week of life, their respective births were registered officially. In the early 1900's children usually were born at home, but these grandchildren survived, living into old age.

A 16 point fabric pinwheel Christmas ornament made of leftover five-by-five inch precut squares from three different charm packs I have bought over the years. Plus, some green as well as red plaid remnants bought at a local quilt show. If you sew, you always have 'leftovers' and unlike food you can save them and use them over several years.

Using leftover 5x5 inch precut quilt squares, I was able to match twelve squares to make this pinwheel ornament. Church bells and wreaths are mixed with small repeating patterns. The colors are dark green, burgundy, light beige, dark tan, with some white accents. The 4-hole buttons on both sides are vintage 1 and 3/8 inches

4/4 🧵 After sampling some of the current biographies, you may want to read Augustine's 'Confessions' in translation. Hardback and paperback editions are available. This copy is an old one from my undergraduate day.
This is an English language translation of Saint Augustine's Confessions. Inexpensive new or used copies are always available. This is a photo of my copy from the 1970's. I reread this regularly either in Lent or during Advent.

3/4 🧵 For those who want a more in-depth biography, this work by Peter Brown is excellent. Professor Brown recently retired from Princeton. Of note is that he was raised in Northern Ireland as a Protestant.

2/4 🧵 For a longer biography, James J. O'Donnell's book is quite approachable for a reader not familiar with Saint Augustine' life, writings, and times. Dr. O'Donnell was the Provost of Georgetown University.

As a Berber of North Africa, Augustine would not have looked like this painting. The author, James J. O'Donnell, is a well known Catholic historian and was Provost of Georgetown University.

Two Books are in this photo. Both were written by Garry Wills, an American historian and retired Northwestern University professor. Also, he is a practicing Roman Catholic. The book on the right is a short, less than 100 page, biography of Augustine. The book on the left, is a short introduction to Augustine's 'Confessions'. Today, we would call this an autobiography and faith journey.

Harbinger of Fall: The yellow and black legged spiders are back in our yard. Spinning of webs began three days prior to the Autumn Equinox. Their engineering skills are outstanding.

In 2017, BlueSky member Annalee Newitz published her novel 'Autonomous'. A key plot invention were Ferris Wheels with solar panels containing Chlorophyll to create clean power. 'Nature Chemistry' just reported a study to do that.
