I think that’s what ground penetrating radar does. Maybe it could map salt water density variation, if that’s what you’re thinking.

It is also a reminder of the challenge journalists and news audiences face to accept that our understanding of how complex systems work is limited & changeable; models are imperfect; even the most beautiful of stories may need updating. The NYT story: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
