8 years since we adopted Maggie, & 3 days since we had to let her go. She lasted 2 months after her kidney disease diagnosis but she was no longer able to eat & was losing mobility. It was a peaceful & gentle death, snoring in her favourite comfy bed, with her family cuddling her.

It's officially side quest season. Last night I spent many hours assembling this little beauty. It was fun and I only broke one small thing that you can't see in the finished build anyway!

In literary studies, machine writing capability has elided the slow push and pull that takes place between writing and thinking, and, with it, the importance of learning to think clearly in language. AI is less an existential crisis about the nature of human intelligence than it is another stage in the extraction of surplus value from those who produce it. Tech and managerial cultures, including in universities, justify large investments in speculative technology in the hope that, either now or in the future, fewer humans will have to be paid salaries, because machines will speak, listen, and write just like people were once paid to. These machines need not function particularly well; they merely need to do the work to some minimal standard. We may laugh at GPT attempting to emulate Elizabeth Bishop, but achieving the heights of human expression was never the point – the point was to automate and extract value from intellectual labour. The dream for our managers is that we might move from the era of the handicraft to that of the factory, from artistry to the ready-made.
