One of the many ironies here is that the (disproportionately white) countryside is so heavily subsidised by (disproportionately non-white) urban taxpayers

I'm not a Labour MP or party insider but perhaps the reason Starmer is so angry is that he knew Mandelson was lying to him at the time and went along with it because it suited him, this is simply displacement.

ps spare us the public service / man of conscience press release.

He’ll definitely try to distract attention from his own football atrocities

Very much looking forward to hearing Thomas Frank endorse these comments

Exasperating that someone like Ovenden thinks ‘crawling back to the EU would diminish us’ and that this might be a valid consideration. Reflects a view from many politicians and journalists that it’s some kind of game. The economy doesn’t care about Mr Ovenden’s feelings.

He’s not though is he? He’s saying that because he’s focused on short term growth he can’t also think about medium/long term process of joining customs union at the same time. Which is crass.

Always liked a bit of positive validation. Personally don’t like to dwell on the negatives, so the same degree of overreaction from a pod in that direction is not for me. I’m biased, and don’t have to listen when it turns out we’re not going to win the lot. This year.

RTR becomes a big negative no go for me. TEI is not as objective as they think it is, but I might listen for Nathan’s explanation of why we were so bad. Fighting C**k becomes my go to as they remember it’s supposed to be fun and still can be, even if the football is rubbish.

Thought he did well for his first start of the season. Better centre forward play and he could have had a couple of assists eg Bergvall @51 mins mistimes run across defender and Dunk clears.

Bloom, Benham & FSG for starters. Ruling out owners who merely supply dodgy financing like Abramovich or Mansour
September 5, 2025 at 5:34 PM
Agreed: terrible owners and outside London hasn’t helped Everton. But has Levy been a ‘good’ manager of a better asset? Or just average? Would you rather have had him for 24 years, or Tony Bloom, FSG? Personal view: he’s been ok but not great. Amazing stadium, but terrible HR & stayed too long.

Fair enough on the 9 year average. The 1960s-1980s point still stands - Spurs had a bigger fan base and more inherent potential in 2001 than other clubs that happened to be mid-table at the time. That doesn’t mean reversion to top 5 or 6 was inevitable, but also means it’s not just down to Levy
September 5, 2025 at 4:47 PM
Counter argument: this reflects shifting baseline syndrome and a carefully chosen 9 year average. Our average league position in the 1980s was 5.83. Levy restored Spurs to where we had been, as a member of the original ‘Big 5’. The club was run down under Sugar in the 90s, but that was temporary.

I suspect the EU could well see €uro membership as optional given the size of the prize in having UK rejoin. It’s always been very good at fudging rules when it needs to. ‘Oh but UK would have to join € and people won’t want that’ definitely not the slam dunk some seem to think it is.

Poch - magic. Big Ange - loved. Conte - bald fraud. I don’t make the rules.

Fair

Respectfully disagree. What about Mauricio Pochettino? He’s magic, you know.

Gloriously silly video too. Well done to all involved, especially whoever came up with the lasagne reference and to Ledley for keeping a straight face throughout

I loved the extended party in the stadium after final whistle. So much joy being shared, felt like a very special Tottenham lock-in, with the Bilbao stewards trying to persuade everyone to please go home so they could close up. Possibly my favourite part of the whole day.

Better get used to it

Still use it, although spell it ‘bof’ because I went to France once and I’m a fraud
