ive thought abt this a lot for my own world building project and really like my solution: tldr is that magic is less so of something that is clearly divided and moreso interpreted. people seperate teachings into categories for easier comms. attached is my writeup from when i yapped @ friends :3
Discord message from me reading: "anyways for a quick TL:DR this is a fantasy world that is admittedly probably fairly basic but Basic Doesnt Mean Bad. the big thing im playing with is a very open, loosey goosey magic system. as in, magic is an essential form of energy similar to light, thermal, nuclear, etc. its like a form of science. every creature has an innate magic floor, or amount that they are born with. humanoids, which i have to come up with an overarching name for, have a very low magical floor. as in, babies are not gonna breathe fire or anything crazy. magic needs to be taught and refined. so people spend years and years of their lives researching magic. which is more okay bc people tend to live a little longer in this world as well. the other thing about magic is that it tends to be grouped up into "trees" and "branches" of magic. magic is a lot easier to control and refine when you hyperfocus it: instead of fire magic, mages would specialize into heat, flame, ash, etc. the more broad a branch is, the more difficult it is to wield. these elements are commonly referred to as Elements of Creation, and are commonly associated with the creation of the universe. this would be stuff like Time, Space, Void, Creation, Life, etc. theres a lot of overlap between these as well because its a purely humanoid created box. just like real life categories! the most commonly used branch, however, would be kinetic. AKA weaponry and normal people fighting. its considered a form of magic in this universe"
