There was a word for serious comics in Japan back in 20th century, gekiga - which translates to dramatic pictures.
It's been somewhat popular during the period when manga was having a particularly exagerrated style, and then they blended together and the term fell out of use.

I usually complement black primer with zenithal highlight (through drybrush).
The main benefit of priming black, is that you don't have to hunt down every little dot of brightness in the recesses. But on the surfaces, it's a massive hindrance.

It is actually the amount of layers they apply. When you sacrifice a human after each layer, drying time flies by!
(and likely undercoat of peach. It lets you get smooth yellow with the first coat)
