Especially in today’s day and age when it’s easier than ever to find and share full colour photos. Show these are real people, it’s living history, people affected are still alive today, it’s not some old story about one bad time in American history that then just ended.

I remember talking to my brother about this a while ago. Specifically when we saw old photos of young queen elizabeth from the 20s-30s in full colour, the ability to colourise photos has always been around. It just shows it’s a narrative choice to make it seem more distant than it actually is.
