My MTH Friends & Kin

I love observing, gardening & engaging with the More-Than-Human (MTH) world. I want to share my favs; to share joy. I use ki('s)/kin('s) pronouns for those in the MTH world, inspired by R.W. Kimmerer (see 4/20/25 post). - Diana (per(s)/they)

"Close up landscapes" are my friends & kin because kin help me to see my environment from a different point of view.

I put my camera near the ground & guess on the framing. I focus on a focal flower/plant, trying to include a wider background. I consider variety of colors, textures & sizes

Texture and delicate details are my friend & kin because kin are a gift from nature that we can enjoy if we just pay attention.

All seen at Garden in the Woods in Framingham today: (maybe?) Azure Bluet, moss on a roof, Ostrich Fern, and Eastern Pricklypear.

Ferns are my friends & kin because kin start as cute, tightly curled-up fuzzy fiddleheads; later kin open up wide & majestically. Coming in a lot of varieties, ferns are easy to grow & maintain. Who doesn't love ferns?

Met these friends today at Garden in the Woods, Framingham, MA.

The peach tree in my garden is my friend & kin because ki is small, pretty in pink, provides peaches to squirrels mostly, and was a surprise gift from the compost pile!

A visitor educated me about who ki was when ki was much smaller, and not flowering. Good to know!

Chicks are my friends & kin because kin are entertaining pets of my friends, while growing up to be laying hens.

While I was meeting them for the first time, one jumped up on my hand when I was reaching out for something else, and then stayed a while! That was fun.

Chickens are my friends & kin because kin are entertaining pets of my friends (pictured ones live with GB & Anthony...others live with Elaine & Mia...and others with KB); they provide good protein in their fresh eggs, and help to control insects.

Worms are my friends & kin because kin graciously turn my kitchen scraps into healthy & happy compost for use in my garden. I love giving to them.

Great in the ecosystem, worms recycle organic material, increase nutrient availability, improve soil structure, and provide food for predators.

Oak trees are my friends & kin because kin are a native plant hosting many insects & birds (the most? 500?); they are big, strong & beautiful.

I provided a safe landing zone under one of the oaks in my yard last year since caterpillars eating ki's leaves need a safe place to evolve.

Calathea Lancifolia is my friend & kin because ki is a gorgeous indoor plant with green patterns on top of the leaves with burgundy undersides. Ki closes up at night!

Phil took pictures of a relative. Inspired, I made mixed media art (see 3/21 on @dagart4activism.bsky.social). I got him the plant!

Cherry trees are my friends & kin because kin flower beautifully, attract pollinators and provide food for kin, and create edible food for us humans too!

This is a Bing Cherry tree that I planted in my side yard in 1998. Ki has grown so big!

Tiny ferns, and other small moisture-loving plants, are my friends & kin because they are delicate looking & can be grown in easy, sweet terrariums indoor.

I was drawn to these friends when shopping recently. Had some large glass containers already so created these. They are growing!

Succulents are my friends & kin because they can be grown in cute dish gardens indoor: full of variety, and texture.

This winter when stuck indoors with a broken kneecap, when I could finally get out, I bought a few different kinds...and created these. I talk to kin every day.

Hellebore is my friend & kin because ki is one of the first flowers to bloom, and has so much diversity in flower colors and details.

Kin open early because they have their own internal heaters!

I like to use ki/kin pronouns (possessive ki’s, kin’s) because I feel kinship with the more-than-human world. I don't like to use "it" with those I love and value.

Bloodroot is my friend & kin because ki is bright & cheery and abundant in early spring; one of my all-time favorites!

Kin's leaves look like a cape that open and close around kin's flowers every morning & night.

Ants propagate the seeds so kin have spread in rivers around my house.
