Advert for the TTC found in Toronto's 100 years by Middleton, J. E. Public Transportation (1849-1934) Fifteen years after Toronto's incorporation as a city, an enterprising cabinet maker built four six-passenger omnibuses and inaugurated Toronto's first public transportation service over a route extending from St. Lawrence Market, via King and Yonge Streets, to Yorkville, near Bloor Street. Under the stimulus of this first public transportation service, the inhabited area of the city extended and developed so rapidly that only one year later the service had to be more than doubled by the addition of four ten-passenger omnibuses. The experience of those early years has been repeated over and over again during the hundred years of Toronto's expansion and development. As additional and improved public transportation facilities have been inaugurated from time to time to provide more and better service over an extended area, the city has been enriched by increased population, additional commerce and industry, and an assessment roll to support the necessary civic improvements and public services of a progressive city. Public transportation has been the greatest single factor in promoting the progress of Toronto during its first one hundred years and will continue to be indispensable in the promotion of the city's future progress. 📚 Just re-read Land of Mirrors by Maria Medem, such a stunning and dreamlike graphic novel.
