The ship that didn't turn overnight...

Congrats! Well deserved!

However, technofascist bros work hard to ignore the fact that Tolkien hated military-industrial complex with all his soul - The Scouring of a Shire part paints a very unflattering picture.

I agree that Tolkien has not overcome a bunch of his own issues - you may add a bit of misoginy to the list (Eowyn starts as a heroine in her own right, only to get reduced to "a pretty woman should find a strong man and be happy" cliche).

Okay, they say it is sanctioned oil - can you try it then with Russian oil tankers evading sanctions? No?

I wonder, why...

Tile installation. That A in Geometry will finally pay off!

True! You can even find the example of using the term "Radical" for abolitionists in infamous the Birth of the Nation movie. When I was watching it, I was like:

- Wait, they still used that term in basically the same sense as they use it now - to attack progressives! That's fucked up!

Another nuance that's worth calling out: @mekka.mekka-tech.com was talking about women empathizing with men's plight. The example you quoted comes from a man named Craig. In the thread there are plenty of women empathizing/ looking for solutions.

(And plenty of women who don't - and that's OK!)

I read the thread. Even the response you're quoted is quite mild and empathetic compared to things Black folks hear on regular basis in such discussions. In addition to that, the thread is full of systemic change ideas (e.g., let's account for speed of development between girls and boys).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Congrats!

Also, the donations to HBA are tax-deductible!
March 10, 2025 at 11:32 PM
Thank you! (Also, I've noticed that HBA has integrated its donation service with ActBlue - it is super-convenient!)

As a Ukrainian-American, I don't see a difference between a refugee fleeing Putin's bombs or gangs armed with US weapons.

I am calling my representatives - but I'd like to do more. Is there a good NGO or charity that helps Haitian refugees?
March 7, 2025 at 9:53 PM
I am deeply grateful to the Netherlands for the support - from help with refugee resettlement to shipping fighter planes!

There may be not a lot of posturing or virtue signalling but the Netherlands have been a strong and reliable ally and I will be forever grateful for that.

That's the classical problem of externalities - people responsible for CO2 emissions should pay for the damage they cause - so the government can use this money to compensate their victims.

But they - not they, we don't.

Subsidizing sick people is an easier political sell (but still way harder than it should be) than subsidizing people with expensive assets (even if those people are not rich otherwise).

No judgment here - just calling out the issues of political landscape. In fact, I wish it was different.
January 10, 2025 at 10:04 PM
The alternatives are very high premiums (>10% of home price yearly) for Miami and LA folks or more manageable increase in premiums for everybody (to subsidize Miami and LA, the same way we do with health insurance for people with pre-existing conditions).
January 10, 2025 at 10:04 PM
It doesn't feel OK. If an insurance company is restricted by law - it cannot force-create a common risk pool (driving prices up for low-risk customers); and it cannot raise the premiums for high-risk homeowners - the only option is pulling out.

I am not saying that Separatists were good guys.
December 24, 2024 at 5:20 AM
Wasn't he a Republican general, with army of expendable clones protecting his ass? (After Clone Wars it is really hard to view Republic/Jedi as good guys, given that they basically legalized clone slavery...)

I don't watch football so I went and searched for the news coverage of this incident. NO major media outlet has mentioned his injury and the way he was compensated.

Thanks for sharing this info! It is highly educational!
December 16, 2024 at 11:58 PM
I know! and I know that you know the context. The only thing I am calling out is that the question is multi-layered, and it is hard to discuss it in 300-character-a-message format.

...and the USSR/Russia-backed regimes did horrible things in Africa (and they are still doing it - e.g. in Mali.)

But Soviet propaganda did win this one. Extra points to it for being able to detract attention from its crimes and colonial ambitions.
November 29, 2024 at 10:33 PM
I see your point - that's why I think your original question is nuanced. There is more than one argument related to this issue and THIS particular one can be scored by the USSR.

Even though it is a lie - the USSR did horrible things even to their own people...
November 29, 2024 at 10:33 PM
The tricky part is that no one WON an argument, neither the US, nor the USSR.

If your country is doing a bad thing (racism), it should do better - and it shouldn't have to rely on the enemy's feedback.

The US had a lot of good people saying the same thing in good faith!
