By including lower classes, in a limited capacity, in the hierarchy they convince them to participate in their own subjugation. A husband gets to be the Lord over his wife, white man over a black man, a manager over a clerk.

It predicates itself on the idea of superiority over inferiority. That the ruling class is in its position because it is naturally better, was ordained by God, works harder, has the sophistication and virtue to rule.
