Today we released an article on revenue predictability for gyms. Most people kind of know that memberships spike in January and again before summer. But I was surprised by the actual numbers during my research.

1/ I started my startup journey in Uruguay.
Today, a podcast about building startups that I often listen to in the mornings said, “Location doesn’t matter anymore.” Well, with the background I have, I can’t agree with that!

1/ A product that once required $100K in development now costs me a few hundred and some late nights with ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot. Does it mean an easier path to success?

1/ I keep seeing founders I follow - the ones with blue checkmarks and Y Combinator badges - talking about "success" like it's this predictable algorithm:

✅ Raise money
✅ Scale fast
✅ Exit quickly

But then I look at companies like Rolex. Mars. And I'm increasingly convinced ⬇️

1\ I'll be honest. When I landed my first few clients, I thought I'd cracked the code.

"Product-market fit? Check. Clients onboarded. Now it's just about scaling."

I was wrong. So wrong.

1/ This morning at my home office, I caught myself thinking: "This is it. We've finally found our sweet spot."

Then I smiled, because I've felt this exact same certainty before... several times. ⬇️

Most gyms are sitting on a goldmine of data...

But they're using it wrong.

They track:
➡ Attendance patterns
➡ Workout preferences
➡ Member milestones
➡ Usage frequency

Then what happens? They send generic 'We miss you!' emails when someone doesn't show up.

After talking with 100+ gym owners, I noticed something interesting:

Most of them see AI as powerful — just not for their business.

Why? They think AI = replacing trainers with chatbots.

But here's what actually works ⬇️

1/ If you want to sell something in B2B, pick up the phone and call. Simple, right?

1/ "We don’t have a retention problem.”

I hear this from gym owners all the time.

But then they tell me:
- They’re spending $$$ on ads to replace lost members.
- They’re offering discounts, hoping people renew.
- Their classes keep emptying out.

So… no retention problem? 🧐

Just started Substack to share some insights that I find when digging into fitness retention research. I hope someone finds it useful.

When I started working on our startup, I discovered a lot of fascinating research on retention and profitability in the wellness industry. However, I’ve noticed that very few businesses are actually applying it. How can we bridge this gap?
January 22, 2025 at 11:51 AM
Research shows that in the fitness industry, a 5% boost in retention can double profits. Yet, many gyms focus on costly new signups instead of keeping members engaged. Clubs need to realize that supporting commitment is actually profitable.

Apparently, new and old gym members care about different things when deciding to stay. I've never seen gyms taking this fact into account tho 🤔
January 18, 2025 at 8:25 PM
I found out that 60% of new gym members quit in the first year. Research points to anxiety, motivation, and service quality are the main reasons.

So why are so many gyms still overlooking motivation? Addressing it could transform retention rates.

This is how ChatGPT imagines me. How does it see you?

Here is the prompt: "Based on what you know of me draw a picture of what you think my life currently looks like".

Listening to Elon Musk’s story of starting SpaceX sparked something in me. Stories like these push me to take action, to aim higher. But the real joy in life is in the journey, not just the destination. It makes me wonder – is Elon Musk’s lifestyle really the one I’d want?

Spent some time diving into healthcare & wellness startups at #WebSummit. Reviewed around 700 companies, and it’s impressive how nearly half of them are focused on mental health. Clearly, this is a new trend.
