Journalist Melissa Chan and activist artist Badiucao have explored the potential reality of 2035 in their new dystopian graphic novel: “You Must Take Part in Revolution”. In the graphic novel, a proto-fascist America is at war with techno-authoritarian China. Taiwan is divided into two, and the threat of nuclear escalation looms over the globe. In the pages of this book, there is no good or bad government – the power is the problem.

This week, President Trump signed an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History”. It aims at eliminating what the president calls “improper ideology” from the American Historical narrative, including at our museums, national parks, and monuments. The order singles out the Smithsonian, claiming that the museum system’s telling of America’s history is a “distorted narrative”. But, says Johns Hopkins professor of History Martha S. Jones, “Americans are more than capable of confronting hard histories, including in the halls of the Smithsonian, and come out still feeling themselves to be Americans.” Chandra Manning, U.S. History professor at Georgetown University, agrees. “It's not a question of trying to tell a positive or a negative story. It's a question of telling a false story when we leave out the people who make up our past.”

Professor Barbara F. Walter, a renowned expert on civil wars around the world, warns that the United States meets key criteria for nations heading toward major political violence. We ignore the warning signs at our own peril, according to the author of “How Civil Wars Start and How to Stop Them.” American history shows that the fight to save democracy will have to come from the bottom up, Walter says. “Protest and peaceful resistance works,” she adds. “Don't voluntarily comply with orders that are illegal. Don't help Donald Trump implement his agenda–don’t preemptively comply.”
