With access to calculators and other tools, my mental math skills have definitely regressed but that's been a minor inconvenience at most. I often think about how much worse it would be to have language and critical thinking skills degrade in a similar way.

Agreed. And even if it's an answer they could have found on their own, if all you do is link a document or tell them to find it themselves, you're actually sending the message that they shouldn't ask you for help.
