Beyond that, being voluntary, who would leave X or FB to join a state-controlled platform that was worse? Plus, pay for it? Not me. Not you.
Please say more about your idea of federated social media. That could be good. 3/3

Agree direct gov control of social media would be a disaster. But state ownership spread across a supranational EU could offer a layer of protection against rogue gov’s within it. Other layers would be the separate governing bodies overseeing its independence & presenting its open source. 2/3

Agree social media is a tool for misinformation. It gets worse every year. But it’s also a tool for communicating science, organizing your life and finding joy. Regulating it away would be viewed as authoritarian and be most difficult technically. So, we should try to curate it better. 1/3

If half US’s 300M citizens paid $100ea, that’d yield $15B/y. Result: an essential service with no adverts or hostile takeovers. Open it to the world. The private platforms would remain intact yet wither away as citizens transferred their accounts to respected state-owned alternatives. 3/3

As a project, it wouldn’t be technically difficult. Kick off for $10B. Cheap. Ongoing cost, est $2B/y. Incl’s servers and curation team. Assume 400 engineers for initial software build. 2/3

Agree. And billionaires can buy elections because they own the social media platforms. The “least worst” solution is a state-owned system. Independently governed & curated. Ad free. Replacing FB, YT, X, WA, TT, IN & Google. These are now essential services after all. 1/3

Epstein coached Bannon re tv interviews in mid Aug 2018. That’s 2 weeks before ABC released Sarah Fergerson’s tv interview with Bannon and this friendly image. Controversy ensued. How does Sarah’s reaction, and Sally Neighbour’s reaction look now?

State ownership would affect the algorithms. Peace, education + health would be valued as they reduce state spending. Screen addiction would be discouraged. Bots hunted & killed by our best engineers. The agenda of social media would change profoundly and so, hopefully, would the world. 5/5

How can this succeed? Answer: with regulation. And more regulation. And governance. A lot of governance. Who can do that? Well, the EU can. Robust governance overseen by a special elected body. Elected by the people. 4/5

If half EU’s 500M citizens paid €60ea, that’d yield €15B/y. Result: an essential service with no adverts or hostile takeovers. Open it to the world. The private platforms would remain intact yet quickly wither as citizens transferred their accounts to respected state-owned alternatives. 3/5

Which state? The famously bureaucratic one – the EU. As a project, it’s not AIRBUS. It’s easier. Kick off for €10B. Cheap. Ongoing cost, est 2B/y. Incl’s servers and curation team. Assume 400 engineers for initial software build. 2/5

Social media platforms are ready to dismantle EU democracy. Privately owned, they are undermining civilization. The “least worst” solution is a state-owned network. Independently governed & curated. Ad free. Replacing FB, YT, X, WA, TT, IN & Google. These are now essential services after all. 1/5

How can this succeed? Answer: with regulation. And more regulation. And governance. A lot of governance. Who can do that? Well, the EU could. And the management of the network might ultimately be set by election. By the people. 4/5
