At no point did I suggest we should do away with copyright.

Bluesky gets very difficult to follow the threads. It shows them all but not indented. Apologies.

What are you on about?! I am pro copyright. I think that the changes corporations have lobbied to get are bad and should be rolled back. I also think anyone saying do away with copyright is an idiot.

Bro, I am a programmer. I have built neural networks for machine learning. I am well aware of what AI is being used for and it is disgusting. I'm very aware of AI being a major sticking point between studios and writers in the strike. I have numerous friends involved.

I didn't. I agreed with him the only point where I mentioned he seemed to be arguing in favor of bad faith actors in the form of corps is when his reply to a point I made against corps was to leave ethics to people who care. He misinterpreted what I wrote and assumed I want to end copyright.

My friend, I was around when the internet was created. Decades before the 90s. I started out pre 9600 baud connection days. I remember when BBSes were created. Appeal to age isn't the flex you think it is. I've been writing the code that powers the internet for almost 30 years.

I mean, spend two seconds looking at my replies to things and it's pretty clear I'm not a bot or some random. I'm making cogent arguments using good vocabulary, etc.

They do, but Estates exist in perpetuity and long outlast immediate heirs. They also often litigate extremely aggressively to prevent works that would benefit the public or are educational/critical in nature. Fair use is a thing and gets way over litigated by corporate/estate rights holders.
August 31, 2023 at 6:23 PM
I never suggested that doing away with it is good. And I have seen very few, and none of them with a legitimate claim to intelligence, saying it should be.

3. How is using corporate exploitation of copyright to the detriment of creators as an example of why the law needs to be strengthened for creators hurting creators?
August 31, 2023 at 6:20 PM
1. It is. He attacked me. Insinuating that my argument is invalid because I don't have a profile picture. He did not reply to my points at all.
2. That's great. Doesn't change that it was ad hominem.
August 31, 2023 at 6:20 PM
All rights to their creations and code to the companies they work for or be fired/not hired. Most companies even go so far as to claim they own anything you create during their hours or with their equipment even if entirely not related. Both ludicrous ideas.
August 31, 2023 at 6:16 PM
The creators already largely have no rights. Look at the insanity musicians have had to go through to get back rights to their works. Kesha spent a decade in a lawsuit. Swift literally re-recorded her entire library. Just 2 of thousands of stories. Authors too. Programmers are forced to xfer
August 31, 2023 at 6:15 PM
I assume you meant to reply to me? That's not what I said at all. Reading comprehension levels seem to be impaired by confirmation bias. I said that corporations that either contractually forced creators to transfer rights to them act out of greed in getting copyright terms extended continually.
August 31, 2023 at 6:14 PM
That's literally what I said. Estates and corporations lobbied gov to continually extend copyright terms out of greed. Their actions have nothing to do with the creator or their heirs. They make the money.
August 31, 2023 at 6:12 PM
Ah, ad hominem... the final retreat of those without a logical argument to make. I am a creator. I have dealt with copyright law vs. corporate claims to own my work. You talk ethics, but you seem to be defending non creator entities with a history of bad faith agreements with creators.
August 31, 2023 at 6:10 PM
Apparently, a bunch of people aren't actually reading what I wrote and just liking what you said because confirmation bias. At least the internet is consistent. Content creators are not greedy for wanting to earn from their creation. Non creators who soak up copyrights and work to extend term are.
August 31, 2023 at 6:08 PM
So you have no counterargument and are just going to comment on the fact that I haven't uploaded a photo yet? Brilliant rebuttal, sir. Do me the high honor of allowing me to bask in your rhetorical genius a moment longer that I might learn your ways.
August 31, 2023 at 6:05 PM
I didn't. Please reread. I called corporations who took over control of copyrights post creators' deaths who lobbied to extend copyright law terms greedy.
August 31, 2023 at 6:03 PM
Copyright originally was 14 years. Total. It was expanded to 28 years with a one time 14 year extension upon request and justification that a world should not be public. Honestly, life of author with a 20 year extension, passed only to a living relative, makes more sense than current law.
August 31, 2023 at 6:02 PM
I get that. But an estate or corporation is not an heir. They exist in perpetuity. An heir has a finite existence. Presumably the creator passed on their wealth. I'm even fine with it extending beyond death, but 7 decades is ludicrous.
August 31, 2023 at 6:00 PM
Life of the author + 70 years is ludicrous. If the author is dead, they stand to benefit in no way from their creation. Estates and corporations lobbied hard over decades to continually expand this limit further out when they did not create the thing copyrighted. It's wanton greed.
August 31, 2023 at 5:56 PM
Copyright was intended to protect the material for the CREATOR so they could earn money from their creation during their life. It was NOT intended to extend indefinitely for an estate or a corporation related to or in a contract with the individual creator.

Or will travel out of state be forbidden to pregnant women? Are we going to have to restart the damned underground railroad?
August 31, 2023 at 7:38 AM
And they say we're the ones taking away rights?! How long before they make you show travel papers to leave the state, armed guards at the borders? Literally USSR here. Will the state be suing the bus company for bot asking if they were traveling for an abortion?
