There's nothing better to cheer me up than going for a quick walk in the neighborhood between rain showers and coming home with a pocket full of boletes! #mushrooms

Numerous clusters of these #mushrooms at the base of an old stump on the grounds of Kennin-ji Temple, the oldest Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, founded in 1202.

Multiple Artist's brackets, (Ganoderma applanatum), with a cautionary cone covering a hole in the ground from a decayed tree stump. Fun to see a familiar fungi on the grounds of Osaka Castle! #mushroommonday #fabulousfungi #Osaka

During WWII, many Europeans were hungry so they foraged #mushrooms on the forest floor. Many ate them fried on sourdough bread. Tonight's dinner is an homage to my German ancestors: foraged Red-cracking boletes boiled and sauteed in butter with garlic, bread crumbs, salt and pepper on sourdough.

I finished up processing my latest golden chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus) haul by dry sauteing and then freezing them. The excitement of finding a big haul of mushrooms is followed by the long chore of processing them before they go bad. Luckily, chantrelles can last a week+ in the fridge.

This is the cutest Ganoderma oregonense I have ever seen. Standing tall, new, and covered in brown spores that look like cocoa powder. #medicinalmushrooms #fungi #forest #reishi

These gorgeous pink coral mushrooms (Ramaria sp.) are stunning and edible, too. Coral crab cakes are on the home menu tomorrow night. #fungi #foraging #foodie

West coast reishi, (Ganoderma oregonense) is fresh and growing right now deep in the forests on fir trees. It is still very soft! The cocoa powder like substance on the left one is the spores. Some people like to taste them. Other people use the shelf fungus medicinally. I dry and powder it for tea.

A fun club weekend camp and foray on the Wynoochee River in Olympic National Forest last weekend! It's been warm and dry, but the weather changed today. Found me some lobster mushrooms and chantrelles. They are tasty and plentiful around these parts. What are you finding? #cascadia #foray #fungi

Last year's NAMA national camp and foray was held in Randle WA. Packwood is close by and there is sure to be an abundance of choice mushrooms, edible and otherwise, in the Cascades this fall between Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. #fungi #foray #cascadia #mushroom

The bitter boletes are huge and prolific, but, unfortunately, not very edible due to their bitter taste. It's a fall forest wonderland out there! #boletes #fungi #cascadia

Dyer's polypore grows on living conifer trees and indicates the presence of brown rot. This older specimen has a beautiful deep red color on top with purple grey pores underneath. As the name suggests, it can be used for dyeing yarn or fabric. #fungi #polypores #cascadia
