I wrote this a couple years ago (2021), but shared it on Twitter last year on his 31st birthday. It’s funny the things that become memory from traumatic experiences. Memories of folks I’ve never physically met seem to have embedded themselves into my brain.

Mike Brown would have been 29 today if state-sanctioned violence hadn’t stolen his life. He should have had birthdays, milestones, and ordinary joys. 🎈
Instead, his name became a rallying cry.
