End to Part 1 or 3 of "What if Robert went North of the Wall"
Theon Greyjoy wanders the battlefield in contemplation, re-experiencing what he saw in the Siege of Pyke. He watches Tarly men butcher a young man no older than him and silently returns to the king’s side. Despite Ser Garlan requesting it, no bodies are burned as the army heads back to the Fist. Again, this takes days to accomplish, longer with the prisoners and wounded in tow. A drunk in Robert’s retinue named Thoros of Myr succumbed to the cold. The war council celebrates every night with Renly cheering the prowess of the seven kingdoms and his brother until Ned shuts him up with a glare. Lord Eddard never returns to the war council. As they get back to the Fist, Robert calls for wine as he is tended to. He is laid in the king’s tent, a massive thing that crowns the Fist. Several important prisoners; Mance, Dalla, Val, Tormund, are kept in one of the smaller tents at the ring of the hill. A few hundred ascend the hill; guards, servants, generals and lords. The remaining tens of thousands are camped around the base. Where the forest closest reaches the Fist’s eastward side is where Jon Snow and his close group of friends watch the other prisoners. Ghost has been having trouble hunting of late and Sam hasn’t seen the mysterious rider that’d been seen since the Frostfangs. As dusk settles in, Jeor Mormont recounts the death. Several dozens of crows and eight hundred soldiers didn’t make a tenth of the fallen Free Folk. Smalljon fell to a chieftain’s brother named Halleck and Lyra Mormont fell fighting five others. Torrhen Karstark died to a spear as he shielded Jaime Lannister. A hedge knight called Kettleblack took a spear in the gut, underestimating a spearwife. Qhorin mentions that Black Jack Bulwer has sent rangers outward. Eddard goes to speak with Mance, flanked by Qhorin and Jeor. Mance tells Eddard that a Stark of Winterfell should be more prepared. Benjen makes a return to Jon’s party after ranging. Shouting is heard from the north and west camps and torches are waved about. Benjen orders the prisoners released and for everyone to arm themselves. The first horn blows. On the hill, Barristan keeps vigil of the king, who has grown sickly and his wound is bleeding again. Eddard speaks with Zei, a worker from Mole’s Town who has been tending to the king. She tells Lord Eddard plainly that the king will not live the night. The second horn blows as Jaime Lannister, commanding the southern front, sends scouts to inquire about the ruckus, and he wonders if the king is partying again. He misses Cersei and a cold wind takes all the heat from him. In the king’s tent, Robert goes into a coughing fit and shouts for his hammer and for Rhaegar. The third horn blows. Jeor and Qhorin freeze, staring out into the night. Eddard orders Jory to release the prisoners. King Robert Baratheon dies. And rises. End of Part 1

Dawn. Late in the year 299 AC. Eddard and Benjen talk as the army encompasses the valley. Thousands of trained fighting men, lusting for battle, have finally made it North. Yet still the trees glare at the Stark brothers. “We have been led to our deaths,” Ned says. He orders Benjen away after talking through a plan. Benjen asks about Jon, but Ned manages not to answer. The army makes three charges at once through the north, center, and south points of the valley. Stakes and archers stalled many knights such as Guyard Morrigen, who took an arrow in the throat. Mance saw to it during the night that those who couldn’t fight were safeguarded to the southern hosts. Fighting breaks out in three fronts, many Free Folk being trampled under horses. Harma Dogshead buries her axe in Thoren Smallwood’s chest, only to take a sword in her belly from a knight named Philip Foote. The Weeper broke rank and fled south with what men he could rally. Styr is struck down by Heartsbane and his son after him. Robert roars in glee as he sees his foes struck down, but then spots whitecloaks falling one by one as Tormund Giantsbane fells Preston Greenfield, Boros Blount, and Meryn Trant one after the other. Pulling his sword from Trant’s face, Tormund challenged the king himself. Robert orders Barristan back and wields his warhammer. The two begin their battle. One has spent his life surviving a wilderness, keeping friends close and enemies on his blade, alive and dead alike. The other, a past-his-prime-warrior whose lazy swing lets the Giantsbane’s blade cut through his side. Robert Baratheon falls to his knees as Tormund begins the killing stroke, which is blocked by Barristan Selmy, whose men encircle him. “Take him alive,” Robert says as he is pulled up by his squires. He groans, nearly passing out from his wound. Selmy orders a retreat, and takes Tormund captive while the man laughs triumphantly. The Free Folk, over a hundred thousand people and dozens of clans brought together by a man of shredded cloaks, are routed, captured or killed and left behind. Groups fled led by the Weeper, Gerrick Kingsblood and others. Garlan Tyrell led a contingent to Mance’s tent, where the King commanded his defenses. The knight entered first, after the guards fell to his soldiers. Mance and Garlan locked eyes before the pregnant Dalla approached. With a few words, she gets Garlan and Mance to lower their swords. She interrogates Garlan to ask him to burn the dead. Garlan cannot promise that so she proclaims that none will last the night that comes. Val and Jarl are taken along with Mance and Dalla. Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, and Brienne of Tarth watched from the raven’s nest. The silence is only broken by the ravens pleading for fire. Sam glimpses the rider again, before they disappear into the trees. Part 1 to be concluded in the following post.

Qhorin complains at how late everyone is, saying he got a head start on killing with Alfyn Crowkiller being dead. Ned thinks that it is possible to speak with Mance and persuades Robert to a parley. Robert is very tired at this point and ready to get things over with despite his lords arguing and wanting a fight. They march to Mance. Benjen tells Jon about a broken horn he found on a ranging, and Jon blows it to confirm it is most assuredly broken. The cold begins to take the soldiers. Slowly, one by one, men wander and disappear. Alliser Thorne being one of them. Days later, Free Folk outriders are taken prisoner and Rattleshirt is questioned by Robert. Rattleshirt says that Mance wishes to parley, and the king asks if the Lord of Bones wishes the same. Rattleshirt responds “Mance is soft” before drawing a dagger on Robert, only for a knife to be put in his throat by Jaime Lannister. Eddard orders the captured outriders to be kept near the ravens and guard posts. This includes Ygritte. King Robert meets with King Mance in the Frostfangs many nights away from the Fist, a few hills away from the grand valley where the Free Folk are camped. It is cold, and the wind is dead. Robert is accompanied by Ser Barristan, Lord Eddard, and Jeor. Mance is flanked by Styr and Giantsbane. Mance questions Robert on how much Valyrian Steel was brought, finding out they have little. Robert mocks Mance for believing in children’s stories. Mance says that getting through the Wall is their only goal, but Robert refuses on the account of them being “wildlings.” Mance makes an offer to Robert and points out the many elderly and children. Robert decides to consider the offer and convenes a war council when he returns to the Fist. Randyll Tarly, Mace Tyrell, and many other nobles came for blood and wanted it. Eddard advocates not to fight so as they do not harm the children. Mormont is all for the attack, but Benjen brings up the missing men. His voice is drowned out by the sudden outburst of men cheering for Robert to go to war. Robert, ever swayed by the might and longing for war, orders the attack. The air gets colder as the army takes many more days to advance. Jon and Ygritte talk about Mance and the pursuit to get past the Wall. Ygritte tells him the army isn’t just fighting groups, but an entire people. Jon gets yelled at by ravens saying “flee!” and tells Ygritte about the coming attack, to which Ygritte responds that “Your King Robert best declare war on this cold, too. It is just as unbeatable.” To be continued in further posts.

A Song of Ice and Fire: What if Robert went North of the Wall

Premise During a feast at Winterfell, Benjen lets slip word of the King Beyond-the-Wall near Robert’s ear. The king asks further about this man and, after reminiscing on lost opportunities of ventures, decrees the next day that he means to break this Mance Rayder. Kings Beyond the Wall It takes months for armies to arrive at Winterfell. The Reach, Vale, and Stormlands formed the brunt of this coalition, with much of the Rivers, most of the West, Crownlands, and Lord Stannis remaining behind. Perhaps most surprisingly is the arrival of Kevan Lannister ahead of a thousand Westermen. During these months, Jon and Benjen went to the Wall, accompanied by Tyrion Lannister. Bran still falls and the letter from Lysa arrives. Since Ned doesn’t go south, Sansa and Arya remain in Winterfell. Cersei only lasts a month before returning to the capital with her children and retainers, but Jaime remains up north After five months and the arrival of many thousands of summer knights, King Robert marches north. He has grown tired of waiting and wants to go and kill Mance. So they trek to Castle Black, depleting much of Winterfell’s stock and then also the Wall’s. At Castle Black, Jon befriends many of the Night’s Watch boys, including young Samwell Tarly, who is incredibly distressed that his father is coming north when they just departed. Benjen has Maester Aemon sent to Eastwatch before the king arrives. Theon has spent many hours at the side of Ned and Robert by this time. Slowly, Robert drew him close and filled his head with yet more wild ventures he could take. Eventually, Robert gets to the Wall, greeted by Jeor Mormont and a ready Night’s Watch, to conduct the greatest ranging in known history. Robert is tired of waiting to fight and they embark quickly. Ned remains distant from Jon, who’s still Jeor’s steward. He becomes friends with a young warrior named Brienne of Tarth, who’s relegated to guarding the ravens that Samwell Tarly keeps watch of. The three become fast friends. As they go north Ned broods and contemplates revealing what he knows to Robert. He grows increasingly more doubtful about this mission and begins feeling the weight of eyes watching him from the Weirwoods. Jeor and Benjen send rangers to Craster’s, as the army isn’t small enough to fit, and they gain their information. Jon, Sam, and Brienne hear about what goes on there secondhand from Dolorous Edd. Ravens, not belonging to the watch, gaze and follow the three as they proceed through the Haunted Forest. At one point Sam thinks he sees a man on a great Elk in the distance. Qhorin Halfhand meets them at the Fist of the First Men. Due to the length of travel, we are midway through ACOK by this point. To be continued in further posts.
