Despite all of the bullshit going on in this city, theres a certain beauty to seeing the summer sunset in DC while listening to Duke Ellington.

It’s an immersive experience to listen to music in the city that formed the artist.

Several songs that have been good to my nervous system since I’ve been on social media hiatus. If you’ve never heard of these artist, check them out.

Flute, oboe, tenor sax have been the background instruments to the soundtrack of my life lately.

Also, murakami’s vivid description of 70s Japan heightened the reading experience for me. It’s nice to see that this was an early work of his and where his other works eventually go after this one. 4/5 stars ✨

Now, onto South of the Border, West of the Sun (1999) 😌

Just finished A Wild Sheep Chase (1989),and it was a wild sheep chase lmao not a bad book, the mystery of the story had a fuzzy ending but I followed it.I can see early Murakami developing his style in this early work. The novel is a meditation on friendship and growing up. (1/2)

If it’s one summer experience I wanna have, it’s seeing Yussef Daye live.

Y’all don’t KNOW, Black Classical Music is has been my not-so-silent obsessions since it was released in 2023. It’s a beautiful addition to the tradition of jazz from a millennial. A continuum ✨

4 albums that hold a special place in my heart. I find myself going back to so many albums but there’s a point where you have to tell yourself, “this album may be in you DNA.” 😅

Voilà ✨

Two songs that sonically and lyrically are speaking to each other. Across genres and decades too.

Music is something in the way that it can do that.

Train rides to and from work while reading mother Toni is becoming my new ritual.

A passage away keeps the depression away or whatever the ancestral mothers used to say

“What I want from you is what I want for you.”

But with every “apocalypse” is an opportunity to change how that apocalypse looks. Morrison starts the novel in explaining the apocalypse of the island, Isle De Chevaliers (island of horses; 4 horsemen reference from the book of revelations), which is illustrated by the rows of winter homes.

The opening passage of Tar Baby is helping me arrive to some conclusions about the past couple of weeks with politics and world events included: many societies and environments have experienced an apocalypse and will continue to.

I didn’t realize what this story was doing, until I realized where it was going. This story reads as a fable of sorts. Henry Dumas was taken from us too soon, but his words are as haunting as they are beautiful.

“Headeye, he was a follow in’ me.”

A list of novels I’ve completed this year. Some are rereads, others are new reads.

My only regret is that I couldn’t read more 😭 staying offline and engrossed in a story saved me this year. The level of peace I have nowadays and a routine reading practice was all I needed.
