The evening before, on Sept. 4, Fox News aired a two-and-a-half-minute segment spotlighting protests outside a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Portland. Similar footage aired the morning of Trump's remarks. The president went on to announce Sept. 27 on Truth Social that he would send troops, saying that he was
"authorizing Full Force, if necessary."
He later said he'd told Oregon's gov-ernor, Tina Kotek, that "unless they're playing false tapes, this looked like World War II. Your place is burning down."

As The Guardian and The Oregonian/ OregonLive have reported, Fox News on Sept. 4 used footage from the 2020 protests after the police killing of George Floyd and said it was from
2025. We found two clear cases from that night as well as one that seemed to match a scene filmed at a key site of the 2020 protests. Fox also mislabeled two other dates of actions shown on screen, and one broadcast implied that a protest from elsewhere was happening in Portland.

Fox News chyrons about Portland the week of Trump's remarks carried phrases like "violent demonstrators,"
"protesters riot," "anti-I.C.E. Portland rioters" and "war-like protests." One host said protesters were attacking federal officers.
This portrayal of protesters as roul-tinely instigating violence or rioting was also misleading.
As ProPublica reported last week, most clashes between protesters and police before the Fox News segment did not result in any criminal charges or arrests alleging protesters committed violence. What's more, based on news releases from federal and local authorities, charges and arrests for assault, arson or destruction of property were almost entirely confined to a period that ended the night of July 4.

The decision to pursue an opinion, drafted in July, reflects the heightened concerns within the government raised by senior civilian and military lawyers that such strikes would be illegal.
The strikes, now totaling 19, with a death toll of 76, began in September, though interagency discussions regarding the use of lethal force to combat drug cartels started early in the Trump administration.
Top officers, including Adm. Alvin Holsey, the head of Southern Command, sought caution on such strikes, according to two people, who like several others interviewed for this story spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter's sensitivity.

Holsey wanted to make sure any option presented to the president was fully vetted first, one person said. In October, he abruptly announced he was resigning at year's end, which will be about a year into what is typically a three-year assignment.
A Pentagon spokesman, Sean Parnell, has previously denied that Holsey had "hesitation or any concerns" about the mission. A spokesperson for Holsey said he had no information to provide about such discussions.
"The [boat] strikes were ordered consistent with the laws of armed conflict, and as such are lawful orders," said a Justice Department spokesperson in response to a request for comment. "Military personnel are legally obligated to follow lawful orders and, as such, are not subject to prosecution for following lawful orders."

The opinion, which runs nearly 50 pages, also argues that the United States is in a "non-international armed conflict" waged under the president's Article Il authorities, a core element to the analysis that the strikes are permissible under domestic law.
The armed-conflict argument, which was also made in a notice to Congress from the administration last month, is fleshed out in more detail by the OLC. The opinion also states that drug cartels are selling drugs to finance a campaign of violence and extortion, according to four people.
That assertion, which runs counter to the conventional wisdom that traffickers use violence to protect their drug business, appears to be part of the effort to shoehorn the fight against cartels into a law-of-war framework, analysts said.

Under Justice Department standards and requirements, people seeking pardons generally must wait five years after their release from incar-ceration, demonstrate good conduct and remorse, and file petitions through the Office of the Pardon Attorney. But Trump's actions in his second term show he has largely abandoned that process.
Those who have followed the rules are still waiting. They include small-business owners with decades-old fraud cases, veterans seeking to regain the gun rights that were stripped away with their convictions and people working jobs far below their experience because of the stigma of a criminal record.

In his second term, the break from the formal process has only widened:
Only 10 of the roughly 1,600 people granted pardons had filed petitions to the Office of the Pardon Attorney, and even within that small group, some did not appear to meet the Justice Department's standards and requirements.
A huge chunk of the pardons, roughly 1,500, were people convicted for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. The rest have come largely through back channels. In some of the more striking cases, Trump's pardons erased not only criminal convictions for defendants tied to large-scale corruption and financial crimes but the restitution judges had ordered or that defendants had agreed to pay.

Provincial councillors in Limburg have called for a permanent memorial to black American servicemen to be erected next to the US war cemetery in Margraten after it emerged that panels commemorating their part in the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945 have been removed.
NRC reported at the weekend that the two panels were taken away from a permanent exhibition at the cemetery, one of which said that black American soldiers had fought on two fronts: against Nazi occupation and racism.
The panels were removed at an unknown time earlier this year, after The Heritage Foundation, a right-wing US think tank, accused the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) of defying Donald Trump's crackdown on diversity. programmes.

Segregated army
The plaques commemorating black soldiers were included the following year. One of them honours the one million black servicemen who fought in Europe during the Second World War, many doing menial tasks such as grave digging in the segregated US army.
The other tells the story of George H Pruitt, a 23-year-old soldier who drowned in June 1945 - a month after the war ended - while laying a telephone line across a river near Bremen, Germany, during the reconstruction.

US military strikes and believes the attacks are illegal, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

The UK's decision marks a significant break from its closest ally and intelligence sharing partner and underscores the growing skepticism over the legality of the US military's campaign around Latin America.
For years, the UK, which controls a number of territories in the Caribbean where it bases intelligence assets, has helped the US locate vessels suspected of carrying drugs so that the US Coast Guard could interdict them, the sources said. That meant the ships would be stopped, boarded, its crew detained, and drugs seized.
The intelligence was typically sent to Joint Interagency Task Force South, a task force stationed in Florida that includes representatives from a number of partner nations and works to reduce the illicit drug trade.

But shortly after the US began launching lethal strikes against the boats in September, however, the UK grew concerned that the US might use intelligence provided by the British to select targets. British officials believe the US military
strikes, which have killed 76 people, violate international law, the sources said. The intelligence pause began over a month ago, they said.
The UN's human rights chief, Volker Türk, said last month that the strikes violate international law and amount to "extrajudicial killing." The UK agrees with that assessment, the sources told CNN.

But while losing elections is bad, misreading the results can be worse. When Democrats narrowly lost the House of Representatives in 2022 but outperformed expectations, they took it as a sign that all was well with the status quo. Instead of challenging Joe Biden, they let him run for a second presidential term and paid the price.
Democrats would do well not to over-interpret Tuesday's blowout. The party locked out of power always tends to be energised. Trump lost New Jersey and Virginia three times. In New York, Mamdani could not have chosen a more beatable opponent than the scandal-plagued Cuomo. In Virginia, Earle-Sears was no Glenn Youngkin, the Republican who skilfully kept Trump at arm's length without alienating him four years ago.

Tuesday alone was never going to solve the riddle. In New York the charismatic Mamdani, a
34-year-old democratic socialist, electrified young progressives to become the city's first Muslim mayor and give the left one of its biggest victories in years. But in New Jersey and Virginia it was Sherrill and Spanberger, two don't-frighten-the-horses centrists with national security credentials, who prevailed.
Progressives and moderates were both given fodder to make a case that they have the antidote to Trumpism. The reality, of course, in a wildly diverse country of 50 states and 340 million people, is not one or the other, but all of the above. The maxim that all politics is local has taken a beating in recent years, but is not entirely dead.

Cheney was in office on 11 September 2001
during the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. While Bush was hurried to safety, Cheney worked with the defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, to assume policy control. Troops were soon in Afghanistan, fighting the Taliban and hunting al-Qaida.
But Cheney's place in history will be dominated by the decision to invade Iraq. He had been defense secretary during the first Gulf war against Saddam Hussein, in 1990 and 1991, but now Cheney and Bush's public rationale for war was that the Iraqi dictator was linked to al-Qaida and thus 9/11, and possessed weapons of mass destruction. By March 2003, when US and coalition forces invaded, no proof had been found for either charge, and both were soon proved false.

The treatment of prisoners taken by the US in its "war on terror" also proved hugely controversial. Out of office, Cheney continued to defend the use of torture against detainees
after 9/11.
A Yale dropout who avoided service in Vietnam, Cheney nonetheless became a giant of Republican politics.

Cheney announced in 2024 that he would vote for Kamala Harris rather than the Republican nominee Trump, saying that "in our nation's 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump" and that he felt a duty to "put country above partisanship to defend our constitution".

A new feature lurks in the backroom of a Whole Foods Market in suburban Phil-adelphia: the ShopBots, a group of robots that fetch Tide Pods and Pepsi for shoppers who aren't fully satisfied by Whole Foods's selection of organic kale and craft beer.

The experiments are part of Amazon's push to shake up its natural-foods crown jewel, eight years after it bought Whole Foods for $13.7 billion. And after years of failing to meaningfully increase its sliver of the grocery business, the retail giant is throwing its considerable weight into the effort.
Amazon brought price cuts and new technology to Whole Foods following the sale, but left its corporate identity intact. That's changing. Unfortunately they don’t get it so I have spent the past two weeks slowly adjusting their (and by extension my) food schedule.

It is a subtle transfer of the physical custody process into the hands of a private security firm - authorized to carry firearms and perform transport duties "in any and all local, county, state, and ICE locations."

These once symbolic gestures of cooperation are today a pipeline for realtime biometric checks and arrest notifications. Transportation is merely the next logical step. The plan even specifies that contractors must maintain their own dispatch and command-and-control systems to manage movements statewide.
ICE is all but extricating itself from the process-becoming little more than an overseer that sets routes, response times, and reporting standards-while effectively turning immigration enforcement into a service industry; a continuous, privatized, and largely unseen system capable of moving detainees hundreds of miles overnight while operating without direct federal presence.
