Your attention is being quantified and commodified, and every minute you spend on IG and Facebook is padding the coffers of a multibillion dollar organization that has decided it’s okay to call me mentally ill and to tell women to get back into the kitchen, all in service of an incoming administration hellbent on starting a large scale culture war that will result in grotesque harm and suffering. It’s a little bit different than liking some art created by a problematic person. I know this is a lot, but it needed to be said. You can find me in other places. At the end of the day, it really is about your constitutional rights, just not in the way Mark Zuckerberg claims. Meta platforms will be a microcosm for this new zeitgeist. This platform hasn’t been an implicitly safe space probably ever, but it’s soon to become an explicitly dangerous one for marginalized people. This is different than consuming media that you don’t like. One could say you can enjoy the Harry Potter franchise and not be a transphobe, even though J.K. Rowling definitely is one. However, whenever you stream Prisoner of Azkaban, Rowling gets money, and she uses that money to fund her transphobic behavior. A step removed from that would be enjoying the work of a problematic author like H.P. Lovecraft, who was a terrible racist. Thankfully, he’s dead, and if I decide to read Call of Cthulhu, I will not be supporting him in spreading discriminatory ideology. You can love art and be critical of the artist, and as long as you are thoughtful about it and work against the harm that artist might have caused, I think there is peace to be found. Instagram is not a work of art. Facebook isn’t literature. In fact, nothing Meta makes is actually a product. The product is you. Your activity on these apps is what makes money for Meta. They track what you do, what you say, where you go, and what you look at, and sell that information. Or they use that information to make models to better target you with ads.

Hi friends, I’m planning on leaving Meta platforms by the end of this weekend and I wanted to give you a little information as to why. I love learning new things, and most of the people who love me also love learning new things. Perhaps some of what I say will be new to you. Hopefully, by the end of this letter, you will have more information than you did before. My main reason is that I strongly disagree with the recent policy changes announced by Zuckerberg, specifically that Meta is eliminating their internal DEI programs, adopting community content moderation instead of fact-checking, and allowing gender-based hate speech on their platform. The main rationale I’ve heard in support of said policy changes is that they preserve free speech. Unfortunately, regardless of what the Zuck says to Joe Rogan, that’s not what free speech means. Your constitutional right to free speech means that the federal government cannot prevent you from expressing your opinion. It doesn’t protect you from Mark Zuckerberg, nor does it prevent me setting boundaries about what you can say to me, and it's unrelated to the interpersonal consequences Uncle Dave will experience after using the F-slur at Christmas dinner. Right now, Zuckerberg and other big tech company CEOs are changing their behavior in deference to the coming cultural changes being pushed by the Trump administration. Those cultural changes are: misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia on a massive, systemic scale in order to create a scapegoat class of people that can be villainized, thus justifying the policy changes and laws that they want to pass—changes that actually will strip people of their rights to free speech, healthcare, and bodily autonomy.
