Therapist asked me to describe what my depression feels like. It's the least I could do to share my personal misery
It feels like being in a box at the bottom of the ocean. It’s dark, the pressure outside of the box is tremendous and there is no way to leave the box without suffering extreme harm and likely death. If I open the box I will be crushed. I watch in horror as my hands drill a small hole in the wall of the box. Water slowly starts to pour in and fill the box. The pressure is equalizing. I will have means to escape eventually. But, filling the box with water will drown me. The hole cannot be plugged only slowed. Additionally, the water that pours in, however slowly, creates air pressure that makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. My lungs are not strong enough to expand and contract against the air pressure. I will suffocate before I drown. I am terrified and panicked. The feeling of regret for not making my lungs somehow stronger, not conditioning my body to extremes and the million other things that I dream I could have done to prepare for this exact scenario, flood me to the point of being immobilized. I ignore the fact that nothing, no choice in life, could have prepared me for this. I cannot accept it. I have failed. I am going to die in a box at the bottom of the ocean and it is going to be my fault.
