I really enjoyed Leslie’s telling of the John and Paul story, and Lewisohn’s obsessive collecting of facts, I think John and Paul were both great, and I don’t see any contradiction in that

Yes - unless when AKOM say this against Lewisohn they’ve seen books he hasn’t written yet? The gang dynamic didn’t stop in 62, Paul still says John is the leader in Get Back, but they dismiss that. Yoko says nothing anymore, the deification of John seems long ago. And who downplays Paul these days?

I really don’t understand the argument against John being portrayed as the leader when all the Beatles said he was the leader! Anyone thinking they know better misunderstands how a gang of boys works. It doesn’t mean ‘best’. I gave up with AKOM because of their wilful blindness on this.

I think there’s perhaps a more interesting book focused on John’s relationships, psychology and mental health. But probably not a best seller!

I agree (if you accept the concept of a soulmate). But you could argue that every relationship Lennon had was a substitute for one he lost. I don’t think that diminishes what those relationships then were. John may have wanted Stuart, but that’s not the partnership he ended up with.

As it’s the story of John and Paul’s friendship, I have no problem with it not going into detail about other friendships. It’s clear Paul had to sleep with Pete Best, my wife got the point when she read it!

It isn’t stated as fact, it’s stated as being what John remembered, which is surely more important in how his relationships developed than the truth he didn’t know?

Thanks for this Chris! What a disappointment though, when we could have the music from the Get Back film, cleaned up Star Club and other concerts, Decca and EMI auditions in full etc. I’m actually…not going to buy this

Technologists seem to think artworks are some kind of effects generator that can be replicated, where actually they’re the point at which people connect with other people and ideas. Take out that connection, the work doesn’t matter.
