Well, water in particular is generally *very* local, whereas the economic impact of the data center is very distributed; thus a locality pays a disproportionate cost, even if the data center is, on the larger scale, a win.

Secondarily, they are largely being used to run AI systems, which are being proposed as replacements for peoples jobs. Peoples whose jobs are thus at risk might not like them.

Because they are large consumers of, in particular, electricity and water, thus significantly increasing the demand for those items, and thus the cost, in a given region.

SNAP damage isn't just hungry people. It's also economic downturn -- all that SNAP money goes to grocery stores, etc. and leaves people with other cash to spend on other things. Most of the folks who can't afford it just won't get the insurance, they won't miss meals to get healthcare.

Yes, and I don't think it accidental that the Senators who are not running again were the ones to "knuckle under" to repopen things. They took the hit for the team, and allowed things to reopen while the shutdown was still doing more damage to Republicans than Democrats.

When people are playing "chicken" on the highway, *somebody* has to swerve, or there will be disaster. You can't really fault the one who swerved, if the other person is crazy enough to go ahead and ram you. Besides, this way, the House has to come back in session...
