I assumed we were being scammed until they brought us up to the ticket office and made me pay the fine with my bank card. I think in our attempt to find the platform we had wandered into a different station and the staircase they hung out in was a regular fly trap for lost tourists.

A few years ago we bought tickets for the metro in Naples. Scanned through, went down the escalator, along a walkway, started up some steps and were greeted by inspectors. They looked at our tickets, told us they were incorrect in some way, and fined us 50 EUR. No boarding of trains necessary!
