Not familiar with the specifics of Google scholar, but Google ads tracks your activity across every website implementing its api. So if you're reading articles on new topics, even on other websites, it can suggest similar things.

Agree it's overused, but it's also overly applicable. MAGA has celebrated the pain their actions will cause their "enemies", and I will not deny anyone the schadenfreude of watching that backfire.
