For some forty years I've heard various self-proclaimed hackers claim that by breaking systems, we are actually doing society a favor, by exposing weaknesses. Perhaps. But in this case, the hacker is receiving something of value, and probably denying something of value to someone else.

Honestly, I don't know why anyone would think the business people exercise care during times of layoffs. When a company reduces headcount to (nominally) reduce costs, they are likely to do so on the most arbitrary or random justifications. Concern is always for shareholders, not workers.

Perhaps you should consider that the way you measure performance isn't actually telling you anything interesting about someone's abilities or capabilities.
