Something moderately cool that happened to me: a while back I found this obscure (to me) historical political cartoon in a set of frames bought at a charity shop, and I've just gratefully transferred it into the care of UCT's Special Collections library.

A brief thread of useless minutiae:

GPT bullshitting: I asked Chat GPT (GPT-4o) to summarise a PDF of the Kenyan High Court's recent order for Worldcoin to delete all biometric data. Thrice ChatGPT gave a fluent and 100% confident summary of a completely unrelated case: one relating to the Westgate massacre, two from South Africa.

My partner and I are on a (delayed) 10th anniversary getaway. Last night we took out the Scrabble board for just about the first time since we had kids, and played until she rage-quit over an absence of consonants and me "playing mean".

I worked on both 2023 and 2024 editions of the Thomson Reuters Foundation toolkit series on AI governance for African contexts, and was astonished at how much tchanged in jus a year. (Thought sadly not in African frameworks).

Aside from the EU's AI Act, the biggest thing was in US state law.

For example, New Hampshire’s HB 1688 prohibits state agencies from using AI for real-time biometric surveillance, except with a warrant, or from categorising people by behaviour or class if this results in unlawful discrimination; Utah passed criminal justice amendments which restrict the court’ reliance on algorithmic assessments in probation decisions; • At least seven states passed laws or resolutions which do not directly regulate the design or use of AI, but serve primarily to establish an advisory body or task force to develop recommendations or policies to guide the state’s approach on artificial intelligence. As of September 2024, more than 200 other AI bills were listed as ‘pending’ in state legislatures.
